چکیده

1. Introduction Augmented reality (AR) is a combination of the real scene viewed by the user and a virtual scene generated by the computer that augments the scene with additional information. There is an increasing interest for applications using AR in various domains such as military, entertainment and surgery. In all these applications the AR presented to the user enhances that person's perception of and performance in the world (Vallino 1998). On its part, Virtual Reality (VR) aims at creating totally immersive environments: the virtual world. The integration of the two adjoining approaches, AR and VR in the same application is a promising way to enhance the perception capacities of both decision makers and agents (human beings or software agents) acting in the terrain. Defence is highly interested in this connection (Piekarski 1999) and more recently, wildfire fighting was presented in (Sahli 2005) as an illustration of the cognitive complementarity between software agents and human beings in the context of a multi-agent geo-simulation. For multi-agent geo-simulations as for integrated Virtual and Augmented Realities, one of the major obstacles is the lack of models and methods to build multiscale virtual environments. Furthermore, there are various application domains which require that this multiscale virtual geographic world be populated by large populations of agents generated in a plausible way according to observations and data of similar behaviours in real settings. For specific application domains such as military and wildfire fighting the active population can be restricted to soldier troop or fire brigade who are the intervening actors. However, when we consider situations taking place in a city, the population (persons, households, firms, etc.) is large and describing behaviour becomes complex (activity, mobility, employment, services, residence, etc.); therefore we cannot focus only on specific actors like police officers.

Improving results of urban design research by enhancing advanced semiexperiments in virtual environments

There is abundant literature regarding virtual reality as a technology of interest in the present age. However, there are few comprehensive studies on strategies that can improve the level of urban design research using this technique. To investigate the issue, this paper first reviews the concept of virtual reality. Next, the opinions of experts in the field of virtual reality technology are s...

Dynamics of Macro–Nano Mechanical Systems; Fixed Interfacial Multiscale Method

The continuum based approaches don’t provide the correct physics in atomic scales. On the other hand, the molecular based approaches are limited by the length and simulated process time. As an attractive alternative, this paper proposes the Fixed Interfacial Multiscale Method (FIMM) for computationally and mathematically efficient modeling of solid structures. The approach is applicable to mult...

The Explanation of the Attachment in Urban Environment based on Islamic Texts and Concepts

One of the reasons for the lack of sense of place and identity in urban environments is the lack of original ideas and human-oriented concepts of Islamic thoughts in the cities. Therefore, paying attention to the sense of place in the traditional environments and its extension to the today's neighborhoods is one of the most important requirements in designing residential environments. The main...

Identification of factors that assure quality of residential environments, using environmental assessment indices: a comparative study of Two of Tehran’s neighborhoods (Zafaranieh &Khaniabad)

Living in satisfying urban environments is important for an individual’s well-being. In order to create such environments, planners, designers, and policy makers need to understand the structures that cause residents to feel satisfied with their environments. This paper focuses on the perceived quality of urban residential environments: dwellings and neighborhoods. First, literature review w...

Exploring the Meaning of Quality from Urban Space Users’ Viewpoint by Analyzing Conceptual Environment Codes

The main purpose of urban design is to create good and high-quality urban spaces and environments for people to live while such quality may not be determined only by imposing a structural, perceptual and value system of the designer. It can be said that human and his powers to perceive surrounding environments are the focus of urban design. Having reviewed previous researches and theories in re...
